Biological Hygiene Care

A Holistic and Biological Approach to Dental Hygiene

A healthy mouth is about much more than clean teeth.

Dr. Cornelius approaches dental hygiene from a biological, whole-body perspective—looking beyond plaque and tartar to consider the health of the gums, oral microbiome, inflammation, bacterial activity, existing dental conditions, and the individual factors that may be influencing a patient's oral health.

Rather than viewing a hygiene appointment as simply a routine cleaning, Dr. Cornelius considers it an important part of maintaining both oral health and overall wellness. The goal is not simply to make your teeth feel clean. The goal is to create and maintain a healthier oral environment.

The Mouth-Body Connection

The mouth is not an isolated system. Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition involving the tissues that support the teeth. Research continues to demonstrate associations between periodontal disease and systemic health conditions, such as Heart and Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s Disease and certain cancers, reinforcing the importance of maintaining healthy gums and controlling oral inflammation.

For Dr. Cornelius, this connection is one of the reasons biological hygiene care is such an important part of comprehensive dentistry. Bleeding gums, chronic inflammation, periodontal pockets, heavy bacterial accumulation, persistent bad breath, or recurring dental problems shouldn't simply be accepted as normal. Dr. Cornelius wants to understand why they are occurring.

Looking Beyond Plaque and Tartar

  • Gum health and signs of inflammation
  • Periodontal pocket depths
  • Bleeding and tissue changes
  • Plaque and calculus accumulation
  • Areas that are difficult to keep clean
  • Existing restorations that may affect hygiene
  • Signs of clenching or grinding
  • Dry mouth and saliva quality
  • Oral bacterial activity
  • Home-care habits
  • Diet and lifestyle factors that may influence oral health

By looking at these factors together, Dr. Cornelius can develop a more complete picture of what is happening inside the mouth.

Seeing the Oral Microbiome Differently

Your mouth is home to a complex ecosystem of microorganisms known as the oral microbiome. Not all bacteria are harmful. In fact, a healthy mouth naturally contains many different microorganisms living together in balance. Problems can develop when that environment becomes disrupted and certain disease-associated bacteria become more prevalent. Dr. Cornelius focuses on reducing disease-associated bacterial burden, controlling inflammation, improving the oral environment, and supporting healthier conditions within the mouth.

Seeing Bacteria Under the Microscope

One of the unique ways Dr. Cornelius helps patients understand their oral health is through phase-contrast microscopy. A small sample of plaque or saliva can be examined under the microscope, allowing Dr. Cornelius and the patient to see microorganisms from the mouth in real time. For many patients, this can completely change the way they think about dental hygiene. Instead of simply being told that inflammation or bacterial activity is present, patients can see what is happening within their own oral environment. Dr. Cornelius uses this information as an educational tool alongside the patient's clinical examination and other diagnostic findings.

Ozonated Water During Dental Cleanings

Dr. Cornelius takes a thoughtful approach to every aspect of biological hygiene care, including the water used during treatment.

During dental cleanings, Dr. Cornelius incorporates ozonated water as part of his biological hygiene protocol. Ozone has been used in dentistry as an adjunct because of its antimicrobial properties, making ozonated water a natural fit with Dr. Cornelius’s focus on creating a healthier oral environment.

A Fluoride-Free Approach

Another important distinction in Dr. Cornelius’s biological hygiene protocol is his Fluoride-free approach. Dr. Cornelius does not use traditional fluoride varnish during hygiene appointments. Instead, he uses Hydroxyapatite Varnish as an alternative for patients when varnish is indicated. Hydroxyapatite is a calcium-phosphate mineral that is naturally present in teeth and is a major component of tooth enamel. Because of its similarity to the mineral structure of teeth, hydroxyapatite is used in oral-care products designed to support enamel and help reduce sensitivity. This choice reflects an important part of Dr. Cornelius’s biological philosophy: carefully considering not only what is removed from the mouth, but also what is placed back into it.

Dr. Cornelius’s approach is not one individual product or technology. It is the way each element works together. From evaluating the oral microbiome under a phase-contrast microscope to incorporating ozonated water during cleanings and choosing hydroxyapatite varnish instead of fluoride, Dr. Cornelius has intentionally developed a hygiene philosophy centered on the individual patient and the health of the oral environment.
